Sensitivity Reading
As a professional sensitivity reader, I work with publishers, authors, and organisations to ensure manuscripts, books, and other materials are both accurate and culturally respectful. My services include reviewing content to guarantee that it is free from harmful stereotypes, authentically represents diverse experiences, and aligns with best practices in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Publishing clients include Bonnier Books (Zaffre, Manilla, Blink), Penguin Random House UK (Chatto & Windus, Vintage, Ladybird, Transworld) and USA (Berkley, Penguin Press, Knopf Doubleday), HarperCollins UK (Fourth Estate), Ian Fleming Publications, Bloomsbury, Usborne, Pan Macmillan (Macmillan Children’s Books), Nosy Crow, Simon and Schuster, Quarto Publishing Group (Wide Eyed Editions), Weldon Owen Children’s Books, Hachette (Hodder & Stoughton, Quercus, Hachette Children’s Group, Orion Publishing Group), Faber & Faber and Dorling Kindersley.
I also work with reputable organisations including Girls’ Day School Trust, Garden Museum, Tate Liverpool, Secrets Worth Sharing and Write Up.
My areas of expertise include mixed-race representation, depictions of Caribbean and Jamaican heritage, Black popular culture, Black British identity and history, African American and Caribbean history, depictions of abusive relationships, depictions of generational trauma and mental health, and classics/historical retellings.
I also offer multilingual sensitivity reading for French, Spanish, and Italian-language books, and offer culturally relevant and sensitive insights for non-English manuscripts. I also consult on internal diversity and inclusion guidelines for publishers, focusing on enhancing editorial policies and practices to promote inclusivity, accuracy and respect.
